Suzuki has joined the ANCAP 5-Star club this week, with top crash safety ratings achieved by the all-new 2011 Suzuki Swift and the Kizashi, the carmaker's first foray into the medium car segment.

For the Kizashi, launched in Australia last year, the 5-Star rating applies to variants equipped with seven airbags, electronic stability control and seatbelt reminders for both front seats.

The Kizashi is expected to gain an update in the coming weeks that will see all models carry a driver's knee airbag, increasing the airbag complement from six to seven across the range.

“Crash tests showed the Swift and the Kizashi held the shape of the passenger compartment well. Occupants were well protected with seven airbags, including a driver knee airbag, all standard equipment in the 2011 models. Electronic stability control is also standard on both models," ANCAP Chair Lauchlan McIntosh said.

Other safety features for the Kizashi include anti-lock brakes, electronic brake distribution and pretensioners for the front seats, designed to reduce slack in the event of a crash.

The 2011 Suzuki Swift also gains a 5-Star ANCAP rating ahead of its Australian debut, equipped with dual front airbags, driver's knee airbag, side airbags and head-protecting side curtain airbags.

Seatbelt reminders are fitted for both front seats, along with pretensioners.

The all-new Swift will make its Australian market debut this week. TMR's Tony O'Kane is at the launch of the Swift today, watch for his 'first drive' review.

Other Top ANCAP Picks This Week

ANCAP also announced 5-Star ratings for the tiny Audi A1 and for 4WD variants of the Kia Sportage, along with a 4-Star rating for the diesel-powered Jaguar XF.

“The luxury Jaguar XF provided marginal chest and leg protection for the driver in the offset test. This meant it was not eligible for a 5-star rating from ANCAP,” Mr McIntosh said.
