Subaru has announced availability of the updated-for-2011 Forester line-up, featuring the Japanese carmaker's all-new 'FB' boxer engine, replacing the 'EJ' engine first introduced in 1989.

The 2011 Forester range is also joined by the new top-shelf Forester S-Edition, teased in concept form at last year's Australian International Motor Show.

Styling

For 2011, the Forester range gains a number of styling tweaks - subtle for some variants and more significant for others.

A restyled grille is featured across the line-up, while the XS variants and above get new wing mirrors with integrated indicators.

XS and XT variants feature new 17-inch alloy wheels, and the XT gains a more prominent and aerodynamic rear roof spoiler. The X, XS and XT variants all feature black-finish roof rails.

The range-topping Forester S-Edition gets a black grille with chrome-style highlights, silver roof rails and the popular STI 17-inch alloy wheels.

Subaru's WR blue colour option will also be available with the S-Edition for a limited time.

New colours in the range are Sky blue and Marine blue.

Other colours in the range include Satin white pearl, Sky blue metallic (not available on XT variants or S-Edition), Spark silver metallic, Steel silver metallic, Dark grey metallic, Obsidian black pearl, Camellia red pearl and World Rally blue (S-Edition-only, for a strictly limited time).

Interior

All models in the Forester line-up get a new dark finish to the dashboard, along with darker alloy-type highlights. XT and S-Edition variants also include new luminescent instruments.

Cloth-trimmed models benefit from enhanced water resistance, and Subaru says it has reduced cabin noise levels through the addition an enlarged, higher-density under-bonnet noise insulator.

The S-Edition offers a sports-inspired interior with a blue tone, along with Alcantara- and leather-trimmed seats, featuring S-Edition logo embroidery and blue stitching.

A sports instrument display, blue-tone foot lighting and a special gear shifter round out the S-Edition's interior highlights.

Equipment

For 2011, the entire Forester range is now equipped with Bluetooth compatibility and, on models not fitted with satellite navigation, iPod connectivity.

Forester X and XS models feature a new entertainment system head unit that includes iPod control, along with aux and USB inputs.

The Forester XS, XT and S-Edition also benefit from a reversing camera, its screen integrated into the head unit.

Safety features for the Forester X include Vehicle Dynamics Control (a form of Electronic Stability Control), ABS brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Brake Assist and, for manual models, Hill Start Assist.

The Forester X also offers front seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, along with double pretensioners on the driver's seatbelt.

The Forester XS offers all of the features, along with a reversing camera and self-levelling rear suspension.

The entire Forester range is also equipped with dual front airbags, dual side airbags and curtain airbags front and rear.

The 2011 Forester line-up carries a 5-Star ANCAP Crash Safety rating.

Mechanical

Non-turbo models in the updated Forester line-up now feature Subaru's brand-new third-generation 2.5 litre boxer engine, the company's first completely new engine design in 21 years.

Power for the new engine is rated at 126kW at 5800rpm, and 235Nm of torque at 4100rpm.

Subaru's four-speed automatic transmission benefits from a number of modifications for use with the new engine, including a new drive plate and crankshaft bolts, a new anti-pitching bracket borrowed from the turbo models, ABS wheel speed signal, and a special TCU and gear change control.

All Forester automatic transmissions include Adaptive Control to assist in selecting the optimum gear to suit the driver’s style and road conditions.

For 2011, the Forester XT continues to draw power from a 2.5 litre turbocharged boxer engine, producing 169kW and 320Nm of torque.

Manual Foresters feature a five-speed transmission, which now includes a flexible flywheel with a damping mechanism that helps minimise vibration and maximise noise suppression in conjunction with the new naturally-aspirated engine.

Fuel consumption is listed at 9.3 l/100km for the auto-equipped X and XS variants, 10.5 l/100km for the turbo-charged XT auto and 9.3 l/100km for the turbo-charged XT manual.

Power for the Forester 2.0D six-speed manual diesel remains unchanged at 108kW and 350Nm of torque, with fuel consumption listed at 6.4 l/100km.

Forester S-Edition

The new Forester S-Edition is powered by a re-tuned version of the WRX's turbo-charged 2.5 litre engine, producing 193kW at 6000rpm and 347Nm of torque between 2800-4800rpm.

The S-Edition also features a five-speed paddle-shift transmission, adapted from the automatic WRX STI, with a higher gear ratio to suit the Forester's characteristics.

Performance figures for the S-Edition have yet to be announced.

As with the auto WRX STI, the Forester S-Edition's transmission features downshift blipping control.

Fuel consumption for the turbo-charged Forester S-Edition is listed at 10.5 l/100km in five-speed auto form, the only configuration available.

Suspension in the Forester S-Edition features a new valve structure, improving front and rear damping responsiveness, producing more accurate control and stability, and enhanced ride comfort.

The S-Edition's damping is specifically tuned to provide a sporty setup that suits the high-powered turbo engine.
