Joining its top-shelf AMG-powered CLS 63 stablemate, the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 CDI BlueEfficiency is now available in Australian showrooms.

As the first diesel-powered CLS to be offered in Australia, the 350 CDI is also the only non-AMG model available in the CLS line until later this year, when the CLS 500 and CLS 350 (both petrol) will flesh out the range.

Power for the diesel-powered CLS is provided by Mercedes' direct-injected and turbocharged six-cylinder 3.0 litre engine, developing 195kW and 620Nm of torque.

With power sent to the rear wheels through a 7G Tronic Plus automatic transmission, fuel consumption for the CLS 350 CDI is listed at 6.2 l/100km. Fitted with an 80 litre fuel tank, the CLS 350 CDI offers a theoretical driving range of around 1300km/h off one fill.

Standard features include LED headlights (142 LED lights in each unit), Distronic Plus radar cruise control and Mercedes' COMAND APS system which offers a high resolution LCD screen, a 10gb music storage drive, sat nav and a Harman Kardon seven-speaker surround sound system.

On the safety front, the CLS 350 CDI offers all the bells and whistles: Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist (vibrates the wheel if you veer over the lane markings) and Attention Assist (detects if you're drowsy and flashes/sounds an alert). There are also 11 airbags.
