Hyundai's all-new 2011 Elantra small sedan is now on sale in Australia, starting from $20,590 (plus on-road costs) for the entry-level manual-equipped Elantra Active.

Along with the Elitre and Premium grades, the Active is powered by Hyundai's 1.8 litre 'Nu' MPI petrol engine, producing 110kW and 178Nm of torque.

Paired with Hyundai's relatively new six-speed automatic transmission, the 2011 Elantra's fuel consumption is listed at 7.1 l/100km. With a six-speed manual, available only with the Active, fuel consumption is listed at 6.6 l/100km.

Drivers of the manual Active also benefit from a gearshift indicator that suggests the optimum gear for the driving conditions, and an ECO indicator in automatic models.

Suspension is managed by McPherson struts up front with coil springs and gas shock absorbers, and a coupled torsion beam arrangement at the rear with twintube shock absorbers.

As with much of Hyundai's more recent models, the Elantra benefits from an Australia-specific suspension and steering tune, along with revised mapping for the Motor Driven Power Steering system.

The new Elantra is longer than its predecessor, measuring 4530mm (compared to 4505mm), with a wheelbase 50mm longer - promising improved passenger space.

Rear storage is listed at 420 litres, expanded through the use of 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

Safety features include vehicle stability managment, and electronic stability control with traction control, electronic brakeforce distribution and anti-lock brakes.

There are six airbags, three-point retractable seatbelts for all occupants and seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters at the front seats.

The 2011 Elantra carries a 5 Star ANCAP crash safety rating.

Depending on the specification, the Elantra's comfort features include dual-zone climate control with cluster ioniser, Bluetooth/MP3/WAM connectivity, rain-sensing wipers, rear-park assist, push-button start with proximity smart key, front seat warmers and a sunroof.
