Report: BMW 1 Series lifestyle models to stretch into new 2 Series territory, 3 Series to make same move to 4 Series badge.

BMW's new 2012 1 Series range could soon become one of the brand's most prolific badges, if reports out of the UK this week are anything to go by.

According to Britain's Autocar, the new five- and three-door 1 Series will be joined by the expected Coupe and Convertible - along with a GT variant and an A3 Sportback-rivalling wagon.

Even more intriguing are reports that BMW will reposition the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible as the long-rumoured 2 Series, in a bid to separate the more lifestyle-oriented variants from the regular hatch models.

While the new 1 Series hatch has so far been revealed with four-cylinder engines only, the 2 Series cars would reportedly continue to benefit from six-cylinder power.

As with the 3 Series and 5 Series, BMW is also reportedly developing a Gran Turismo version of the 1 Series, although reports claims this variant will utilise the BMW Group's new front-wheel-drive platform destined for future BMW and MINI models.

The possible numbering shakeup is not without precedent: Audi's A4 convertible was superseded by the A5 Cabriolet, along with the A5 Coupe and the more recent A5 Sportback.

Separating the 1 Series Coupe and Convertible from their hatch stablemates would also allow BMW to switch future versions of the 1 Series hatch to its new front-wheel-drive platform, while keeping the more performance-oriented models on the traditional rwd architecture.

The 1 Series won't be the only model to undergo cell division however, with the 3 Series Coupe and Convertible rumoured to be graduating to 4 Series badges.

BMW's all-new 3 Series is expected to debut in the coming year, and according to car magazine, the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible will appear sometime in 2013.
