If you’re one of our younger readers and wondering what the best way is to get your foot in the door of the automotive industry… you should do some googling. (You kids these days, I don’t know...)

But, if you haven’t done that yet, the 2009 Melbourne International Motor Show is the place to be.

The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC), who stages the Melbourne Motor Show, is Victoria’s largest employer of automotive apprentices, and is also a Registered Training Organisation.

VACC Executive Director David Purchase says that despite the economic down-turn, there is still a skills shortage in automotive technicians.

“Anyone thinking of pursuing a career in the automotive industry should spend some time at our stand at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. You can’t miss it. It’s the one with Darren Morgan’s Force-Tools/VACC Top-Fuel Drag car and the VACC sponsored Holden Race Team V8 Supercar.”

Mr Purchase went on to say that VACC’s apprenticeship and training advisers are eager to speak with anyone looking to take on an automotive apprenticeship, or anyone who’d simply like to know a little more about the trade.

“VACC puts the upmost importance on training. Without the next generation of mechanics and skilled technicians, the industry will lose its competitiveness. That is why it is vital that young people are given a taste of the industry and supported every step of the way, in order to achieve their dreams,” Mr Purchase said.

“For anyone interested in vehicle design and model-making, a visit to the VACC ‘car of the future’ Target 2020 exhibition is a must. For the past two years, tertiary winners of the competition, open to tertiary and secondary students, have been snapped up by Ford and Holden,” Mr Purchase said.

Target 2020 is a great opportunity for aspiring automotive designers. TMR in fact has benefitted from the skills of a Target 2020 two-time winner not too long ago, with the excellent Ford Falcon Sportwagon concept, put together by talented designer Kirk Dyer.

So kids, get a haircut, and get your arses down to the Melbourne Motor Show this weekend!
