Volkswagen has lifted the lid on its latest design concept at the Bologna Motor Show: the Scirocco-based Studie R. While just a concept for now, the Studie R is essentially our first look at Volkswagen's upcoming replacement for the Golf R32, which will be based on the Scirocco and is expected to debut sometime in late 2009.

VW_Scirocco_StudieR_05 Rumoured to be called the R20T, next year's hi-po Scirocco is expected to make use of a 201kW 2.0 litre turbocharged inline four driving the front wheels through a six-speed DSG gearbox - just like the Studie R. A stiffer suspension and a bigger brake setup are also a given, but the production R20T may not receive the Studie R's race-derived four-piston brake calipers due to cost concerns.

Externally the Studie R bears much resemblance to Volkswagen's GT24 Nurburgring endurance racer, with a vented bonnet, a rear diffuser and large cooling apertures in the front bumper imparting a very racy feel to the Scirocco's already dynamic form. Carbonfibre trim has been liberally applied to the Studie R's interior and there's a pair of deeply-bolstered carbon-backed racing seats, but other than those additions the Studie R's cockpit is mostly standard-issue Scirocco.

The Studie R looks fantastic and we're betting it'll be a cracking drive, but there's one big problem. You can't buy one.

Bring on the R20T Mister Volkswagen, and bring it on quick.
