Bernd Pischetsrieder the Chief Executive of Volkswagen AG believes that diesel-powered cars are a better way to reduce fuel consumption and pollution than hybrid petrol-electric vehicles.

Pischetsrieder announced his beliefs at the Los Angeles auto show and went on to say

"Any significant reduction of fuel consumption under all conditions requires diesel technology," said Pischetsrieder

Pischetsrieder also said that hybrids only provide meaningful savings in stop-start traffic. Get one out on the highway and a hybrid will generally use more fuel than a similar sized diesel powered vehicle as well as costing more to manufacture.

VW is developing advanced diesel engines and fuels that it believes will be more fuel efficient and cleaner than current petrol-electric hybrids.

VW are banking on diesel sales continuing to trend upwards and Pischetsrieder stated that they will continue to promote and advertise diesel engines because they think they are the way of the future.
