Volvo’s new XC60 SUV – nominated by EuroNCAP as the vehicle with the best whiplash protection – will be available in petrol and turbo diesel form, at a starting retail price of $57,950.

The new XC60 will offer a choice of two engines and feature as standard Volvo’s new City Safety system, designed to reduce the severity of collisions at speeds up to 30km/h.

Engine

The two engines on offer are:

  • The five-cylinder turbo diesel XC60 D5, producing 136kW and 400Nm of torque, and a fuel consumption figure of 8.3l/100km with the six-speed Geartronic adaptive automatic.
  • The new 3.0-litre turbo petrol six-cylinder XC60 T6, producing 210kW, will accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 7.5 seconds.

Safety

According to Volvo, the new XC60 is the most advanced Volvo ever, and features the advanced new City Safety system that has been designed to reduce both the incidence and severity of urban collisions at speeds up to 30km/h.

Volvo says that this system is so advanced that it can detect the possibility of rear-end collisions at urban speeds, and has the ability to avoid a collision entirely in situations where the speed difference is anywhere up to 15km/h.

"The new XC60 will further raise the levels of dynamism within the Volvo lineup, as well as introducing what is perhaps the greatest step forward yet in terms of active safety with the new City Safety system," said Volvo Car Australia's Managing Director, Alan Desselss.

"In addition, it will be priced to issue a real challenge in the prestige SUV segment," he added.

The Volvo XC60 features Haldex electronically managed AWD technology with Instant Traction to assist with on-road stability and wheel grip, and is supported by Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), and ABS anti-lock braking with Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist.

The Volvo XC60 is due for launch in Australia this coming March, 2009.
