While it busies itself looking for a buyer, Volvo is reportedly looking toward a future that features a line-up of nothing but four-cylinder models.

According to German mag Auto Motor und Sport, a Volvo insider has hinted that the Swedish carmaker will soon drop its five, six, and eight-cylinder models.

It’s believed this action will be taken as part of a plan for Volvo to meet new European emissions laws due to hit in the near future, with reports suggesting that cars will be required to emit no more than 95g/km of CO2 by 2020.

It’s a bold move for the company as it deals with Ford preparing to sell it off. One positive is that it would allow Volvo to work on other, less resource-consuming aspects of its business.

With the power available from contemporary four-cylinder engines rivalling that made by bigger capacity units – often through the use of turbo and super chargers, as well as direct injection – we suspect the move will prove to be a successful one.
