Volvo’s Polestar performance division has so far only produced two fully-formed products (that’d be the surprisingly swift S60 Polestar sedan and V60 Polestar wagon), however it appears the Swedish brand’s in-house tuning arm will soon be turning its attention to Volvo’s new 90-series models.

That means the S90 large sedan (below) and V90 large wagon will be sporting (apologies for the pun) Polestar’s trademark blue square on their rumps in the near future, and receive significant performance upgrades under the bonnet.

The news comes from US outlet Motor Trend, which quotes Volvo R&D boss Peter Mertens as saying the S90 and V90 will receive Polestar variants of their own - and that they could have as much as 447kW underfoot.

Mertens told Motor Trend that Volvo’s now-ubiquitous 2.0 litre turbo/supercharged petrol engine (which powers, among other things, the XC90 T8 and the updated S60/V60 Polestar, above) can be tuned to produce over 335kW, while the electric motor that powers the rear axle in T8 models could be upgraded to a higher-output item to bring total system output to 447kW.

That number compares favourably with the present competition from Volvo’s German rivals, with the twin-turbo V8s of the Mercedes-AMG E63 and BMW M5 producing 430kW and 412kW respectively.

Right now the most powerful Volvo available is the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid SUV (above), which makes 298kW and 640Nm from its supercharged 2.0 litre petrol inline four and electric motor combo.

The 2017 S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar come in second place, with 270kW and 470Nm of torque from a non-hybrid version of the XC90’s powertrain. That’s 12kW more power than the existing S60 Polestar’s 3.0 litre turbo inline six, which is on the cusp of being phased out.
