Volvo's teaser image of the S60 Sports Sedan Concept, released some weeks ago, showed an exquisite crystal rendering of Volvo’s trademark ‘waterfall’ central console stack. The image was stunning and, if the darkened lines of the first official exterior photo of S60 are anything to go by, the rest of the car ain't too shabby either.

The Sports Sedan Concept will make way for a production version come 2010; suffice to say we can expect the overall shape to be largely the same. We're doubtful those suicide rear doors will stay but we'll be keeping our eye on the car's unveiling in Detroit.

Steve Mattin, design director for Volvo, confirmed Volvo's direction with the S60 concept:

"The concept car's exterior gives a clear indication of what customers can expect of the all-new S60. On the inside we've been even more daring – there the focus has been on creating a vision of the future. The inspiration comes from the Swedish coastline's cliffs and seas," he said.

Reports suggest that the production version S60 will be based on the latest version of the European market Ford Mondeo. This should mean similar engine and drive-train options including the 2.5 litre turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine seen locally. Combine this with the styling you see here and we reckon Volvo is onto a winner.
