Volvo 2.0 Litre GTDi Engine Confirmed For Australia

VOLVO AUSTRALIA has today confirmed its new turbo-charged 2.0 litre four-cylinder GTDi petrol engine will arrive in Australia sometime in 2011, offering 149kW of power and 300Nm of torque from 1750rpm.

The new Euro V-compliant DOHC engine, based on Ford's upcoming EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, will feature in the Volvo S80, V70 and XC60 models. The all-new S60 is also likely to make use of the GTDi powerplant.

"We've succeeded in making a four-cylinder engine that is as powerful as a 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit, and it's also much more energy-efficient," Magnus Jonsson, head of Product Development at Volvo Cars said.

"One of the most important reasons behind the results is our new, patented turbo system that has been tailor-made for smaller energy-efficient engines."

According to Volvo, the GTDi engine's K03 turbocharger is the smallest on the market, compared to the engine's maximum output.

Integrated into the manifold, both the turbocharger and the manifold itself are made from sheet steel instead of a casting, making for lighter and more compact construction. The end result is less heat and high gas flow temperature.

Paired with the globally-developed PowerShift transmission, the GTDi engine accelerates the S80 to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds. A six-speed manual transmission will also be offered, dropping the S80's 0-100km/h time to 7.9 seconds.

Fuel consumption for the GTDi-powered S80 is listed as 7.9 l/100km when mated to the manual transmission, and 8.3 l/100km with the PowerShift auto.
