Scirocco lovers in the UK are set to be spoiled for choice by the introduction of a new and more powerful diesel engine to the range.

At present a 2.0 litre TDI unit making 103kW sits atop the diesel engines list, but Volkswagen will now offer a 125kW (170hp) version. More importantly, peak torque now comes in at 350Nm (258 lb-ft) which is available from as low as 1750rpm.

Buyers can choose from a slick six-speed manual or Volkswagen's much loved six-speed DSG. While it's no supercar, the Scirocco GT TDI is no slouch either, with a 0-100km/h time of 8.1 seconds and a top speed of over 216km/h (135mph).

On the combined Euro cycle, the GT TDI is said to return efficiency figures of around 5.3L/100km. Emissions are equally impressive with 139g/km of C0² for the manual and 147g/km for the a DSG-equipped model.

Aside from the diesel mill, buyers will also receive a multifunction computer, rain sensing wipers, automatic headlights, ABS, ESP, six airbags, and a six-stacker CD player.

Adaptive Chassis Control is also included and allows the driver to modify suspension and steering settings to their liking.

To get your bum in the manual you'll need around AU$44,000 (£21,755), and that jumps to AU$46,500 (£23,060) for the DSG.

If rumours regarding the possible arrival of the Scirocco on these shores ring true then we might have a chance at seeing the GT TDI ourselves. Fingers crossed.
