VOLKSWAGEN HAS TODAY revealed the latest addition to its line of ultra-efficient Up! concepts, called the Up! Lite.

Powered by a diesel-electric hybrid system, Volkswagen claims the Up! Lite will consume just 2.44 litres of fuel per 100km.

Producing 38kW, the Up! Lite's 800cc three-cylinder turbo-diesel engine is paired with a 10kW electric motor and mated to a seven-speed DSG transmission.

Stop-Start and regenerative braking technology figure among the Up! Lite's fuel-saving systems.

When extra power is needed, the hybrid system is capable of briefly boosting output to 48kW.

Volkswagen says the Up! Lite will reach 100km/h in 12.5 seconds, on to a top speed of 160km/h.

Measuring 3840mm long, 1400mm tall and 1600mm wide, the Up! Lite is only slightly smaller than the Polo. Thanks to the extensive use of aluminium and carbon fibre, however, the concept weighs in at just 695kg.

The German carmaker says the Up! Lite's appearance, which carries a sharper, more stylised version of Volkswagen's newer models, is reminiscent of the Scirocco.

Models based on the Up! range of concepts are expected to debut in Europe toward the end of 2011, followed by an all-new Beetle in 2012.
