VOLKSWAGEN IS PREPARING to reveal the rumoured Golf R at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive successor to the Golf R32.

The Golf R will dump the R32's 3.2 litre naturally aspirated V6 in favour of a tuned version of the Golf GTI's 2.0 litre turbocharged inline four, but will retain the R32's Haldex all-wheel-drive system.

Power is rumoured to be around the 208kW mark - a significant increase over the R32's 184kW output, and over 50kW more than the Golf GTI.

Zero to 100km/h sprints should be done away with in well under six seconds, and, with a lighter engine in the snout, the AWD system should provide the Golf R with even more stupendous grip than the R32.

The Volkswagen Golf R is widely tipped to make its official debut at next month's Frankfurt Motor Show, with European sales to commence later this year.

It is not yet clear whether the Golf R will come Australia's way, but with the R32 not long for this world, the 200+kW Golf R AWD hatchback would be just the ticket.
