Volkswagen R GmbH Division Announced

RUMOUR NO LONGER, Volkswagen has today announced the launch of its new performance arm: Volkswagen R GmbH. The German carmaker describes the move as a response to "the increased global demand" for exclusive, sports-oriented model variants.

Volkswagen has revealed little on its plans for the new division, confirming only that it will be responsible for the design and development of new performance and sports styling packages for the VW line-up.

For now, Volkswagen R's range consists of the European-market Scirocco R (under consideration for Australia) and the upcoming Golf R, expected to make a local debut around June or July this year. Technical details for the Australian-delivered Golf R were uncovered by TMR yesterday.

The new company, based in Warmenau - near Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters - will be overseen by Ulrich Riestenpatt gt. Richter, leading a staff of over 350.

"Our vehicles contribute to the emotionalisation and growth of Volkswagen brand," Mr Riestenpatt gt. Richter said.
