VOLKSWAGEN HAS TAKEN out double honours in this year's World Car Of The Year awards, with the 2010 Polo named World Car and the BlueMotion range named World Green Car.

The new fifth-generation Polo, due to launch in Australia next month, beat out the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Toyota Prius in its quest for the top spot.

Other cars in the running included the BMW X1, Mazda3 and Chevrolet Cruze (sold locally as the Holden Cruze). In total, 30 cars were eligible for this year's World Car Of The Year award.

The Polo followed in its big brother's footsteps this year, the Golf 6 taking the prize in 2009. The Polo's win in the WCOTY awards follows its victory in the European Car Of The Year awards in December last year.

“We’re honored that the Volkswagen Polo was chosen by this distinguished group of jurors,” Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG said.

“After the great triumph of the Golf last year, we are delighted to repeat this success with the new Polo. These automobiles have reaped numerous awards, winning well-nigh every prize the automotive industry has to award. This shows that Volkswagen is on the right track and is offering arguably the best range of products in its history.”

The new Polo is scheduled to arrive in Australia in May. Specific dates, local pricing and engine options have not yet been revealed. The 2010 Volkswagen Polo GTI is expected to arrive in the later part of the year.

In Europe, engine options include 1.2 and 1.4 litre petrol engines, and a turbocharged 1.2 litre TSI petrol engine. A new 1.6 litre TDI common rail diesel engine is also offered.

Volkswagen BlueMotion Range Named World Green Car Of The Year

FOR 2010, the best environmentally-conscious car is not only more than one model - it's a range you can't even buy in Australia. Beating out the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insight, the Volkswagen BlueMotion range - which counts versions of the Polo, Passat and Golf in its line-up - was named the 2010 World Green Car Of The Year.

Speaking with TMR last year, Volkswagen Australia's Karl Gehling said that the company is “eager to get the BlueMotion range onto Australian roads, but it won’t happen until the [BlueMotion] technology can be offered with Volkswagen’s DSG transmission.”

In announcing its decision, the 59-member WCOTY panel took a shot at hybrid cars, reminding buyers and carmakers that there are other ways to offer ultra-efficient cars.

"It is not necessary to add an electric motor and a heavy battery pack to achieve class-leading efficiency. Based on Volkswagen's common-rail diesel engines, the BlueMotion models are among the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market."

"In fact, the Passat BlueMotion can travel just about 1,000 miles on one tank of fuel in the European cycle. As far as internal combustion engines go today, these models are the ultimate you can get."
