VOLKSWAGEN JETTA COUPE

One part 2010 Jetta and one part New Compact Coupe Concept, images of a production-ready Volkswagen Jetta Coupe have been discovered this week in the US trademark office's public database.

Uncovered by US blog Carscoop, the images reveal a coupe that borrows the profile of its NCC concept sibling, while leaning to the less showcar-oriented front and rear lines of the upcoming Jetta sedan.

While Volkswagen has yet to reveal official plans for a two-door version of the new Jetta, the production-oriented styling of this patent filing bodes well for the possibility.

It remains to be seen what powerplants will feature in the possible Jetta Coupe. The concept version, revealed at Detroit in January ahead of the sedan's unveiling, is powered by Volkswagen's 1.4 litre TSI four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with a 20kW electric motor.

Together, the petrol-electric hybrid arrangement produces 132kW and 240Nm of torque.

For the NCC concept, acceleration to 96km/h (60mph) - with the full hybrid system in play - is estimated to take around 8.1 seconds. Top speed is listed as 225km/h.

In Europe, the new Jetta sedan will be offered with an expansive engine line-up. Among the petrol engines will be a 77kW 1.2 litre TSI, 90kW 1.4 litre TSI, 120kW 1.4 litre TSI and a 150kW 2.0 litre TSI.

Diesel options will be limited to two engines, including a 77kW 1.6 litre TDI and a 105kW 2.0 litre TDI.
