Volkswagen reportedly believes an SUV, even one manufactured by itself, is not worthy of the Volkswagen GTI treatment.

That’s the word from company boss Herbert Diess, who said the GTI badge belongs only on hot hatches.

Volkswagen only recently added to its GTI model range with the new up! GTI (not available in Australia), which joined the existing Polo GTI and Golf GTI models.

With GTI hot hatches in the micro, light and small segments, Diess believes all necessary bases are covered.

“I think with the three [GTI models] we have now, we are set,” Diess said, speaking with the UK’s Autocar.

“GTI for us is ‘the’ hot hatch - a sporty car, classless, with potential for everyday use and accessible for many. It should be this car - a hot hatch.”
