Is this the new Mk VI Golf? There's a good chance it is - as the official unveiling is this week - and thanks to the power of the Internet you can take a look sooner rather than later.

We'll have to wait for the formal release before we can be totally sure but the very official-looking images below surfaced today, accompanied by a few tidbits regarding what engine and gearbox options we should expect to see. It's all fairly standard stuff with reports indicating the new Golf range will include a 1.4L TSI, 1.8L TFSI and possibly 2.0L TFSI. The company's 1.9L and 2.0L TDI oil-burners will be called upon for diesel duties. Gearbox options will be plentiful with a manual, automatic and DSG transmission on offer.

If you think you've seen that front before that's probably because it looks strikingly similar to the new VW Scirroco - not a bad thing in my view. Volkswagen chief Walter Da'Silva was quoted back in June saying he wanted new models to return to basics and share a standard design template. If it means we'll see more good looking cars like the latest Golf I'm all for it.
