Volkswagen Australia has launched a new entry-level variant into the local Golf line-up, the Golf 77TSI, driven by the same turbocharged 1.2 litre TSI petrol engine available with the smaller 2010 Polo.

Producing 77kW and 175Nm of torque, the ultra-frugal 1.2 litre petrol engine lists a fuel consumption figure of just 6.1 l/100km when paired in the Golf with a six-speed manual transmission.

Volkswagen's seven-speed DSG automatic transmission is also available as an option.

The new entry-level model is priced at $21,990 (manufacturer's list price) while offering features largely on par with the previous base petrol model, the 90TSI.

Alongside the introduction of the Golf 77TSI, the whole Golf Trendline range, including the Golf Wagon Trendline, receives an equipment upgrade at no extra cost.

Popular features such as cruise control and multi-function leather steering wheel now come as standard, together with the option of Bluetooth connectivity.

The launch of the Golf 77TSI is sure to make the decision between the Polo and the Golf a tough one for buyers, with size, power and equipment preferences bound to make the biggest difference.

Powered by the same 1.2 litre turbocharged engine, the Polo 77TSI is priced at $19,850, while the Polo 66TDI diesel is $22,350 - placing the smaller car above the entry-level Golf in pricing.

Pricing and Availability

As the entry-level model, the Golf 77TSI starts at $21,990 for the six-speed manual, while the seven-speed DSG variant is priced from $24,490.

Note: prices are Manufacturer's List Price only and do not include dealer delivery or on-road costs.
