Volkswagen’s solution for its 2.0 litre EA189 diesel engine in its home country of Germany has been approved by authorities, as the fallout from the 2015 emissions scandal continues to play out.

Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (abbreviated as ‘KBA’) has given the emissions-fix the green light, and Volkswagen has announced that the recall campaign will commence shortly.

The carmaker announced late last year that a relatively simple software upgrade would see affected models with 2.0 litre EA189 engines comply with the relevant Euro emissions regulations.

Under the guidance of the vehicle’s existing software, the now-infamous emissions ‘defeat device’ enabled the car’s emission readings to greatly exceed claimed figures and operate outside of legal requirements under various environmental acts.

Volkswagen’s Passat, Caddy and Tiguan will be among those included in the next round of recalls, along with Audi’s A4, A5, A6 and Q5 models, with the tally set to exceed one million vehicles.
