Volkswagen has whipped the wraps of its Concept Pickup just days before the vehicle is set for debut at the 62nd IAA Commercial Vehicles Show. If the idea of a 1-tonne utility from a company renowned for build quality and reliability sounds good to you, then the Pickup may be right down your alley.

Looking like something straight off the set of Baywatch, the Pickup is designed for coastal search and rescue efforts (if the SARs stickers didn't give it away) and comes equipped to tackle all you might expect on a day at Bondi. (With, one assumes, emergency supplies of tanning oils, sun-screens, lip-gloss, Oakley sunnies and 'budgie-smugglers' - for those real emergencies... "omigod, a shark has eaten my Speedos!")

A fully functioning light-bar will alert the masses of your arrival while a two-piece tail-gate stores essential tools and provides easy access to the cargo bay. Inside the twin-cab, the trim is looking surprisingly well-finished for a concept vehicle and boasts a multifunction touchscreen for radio and navigation systems.

A full feature list, including engine and drive-train details, will not be available until the official release during the IAA show but we do know there will be both petrol and diesel engines on offer.

Expect the new Pickup to be called the Robust (good grief... the 'Robust'?) when it's released sometime in 2009. At this stage, reports indicate that South America, South Africa, Australia and possibly Europe are on the delivery list. If the VW Concept Pickup tickles your fancy you've got plenty of time to get saving.
