Many of you will know that commercial vehicles often come with a range of compromises between price, comfort, performance, practicality, and, unfortunately, sometimes safety as well. Volkswagen however has recently pulled a double in that two of its commercial vehicles have achieved solid four-star ANCAP ratings. First it was the Transporter, and now it's the Caddy Van's turn.

Philip Clark, Director of Commercial Vehicles for Volkswagen Group Australia had this to say after hearing the good news:

“This result demonstrates the commitment Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has to delivering class leading safety. The Caddy Van is a popular model and to receive a four-star rating from ANCAP highlights one of the many strengths of our commercial range.”

A driver’s side airbag and anti-lock brakes (ABS) come fitted to the Caddy as standard while a front passenger airbag, side airbags and Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) are optional on all models.

The Caddy Van range is available in either standard or long-wheelbase (Caddy Maxi) variants. A 1.6-litre petrol or 1.9-litre TDI diesel engine are available with a five-speed manual transmission fitted to both engines. The TDI diesel can also be optioned with Volkswagen's popular six-speed DSG transmission to make light work of inner-city jobs.

While most of us aren't likely to rush out to our local Volkswagen dealer on the back of this news, it's good to see a manufacturer extending passenger car safety systems to commercial vehicles. Why should people working behind the wheel be any less safe?
