The off again on again talks concerning a cooperation between Volkswagen and Malaysia’s Proton is off...again. For the second time in as many years the talk of cooperation between the two manufacturers has ended without a deal being struck.

A VW announcement made it clear that both Volkswagen and the Malaysian Government will not be continuing discussions over the possibility of Proton and VW entering into a cooperative arrangement or of VW purchasing a stake in Proton.

VW were interested in partnering with Proton as a way of gaining entry to the Southeast Asian market. It is believed that VW will continue to look at potential partners while Proton is resigned to going it alone having previously held similar talks with GM and French manufacturer PSA Peugeot Citroen.
