Volkswagen 1.4 Litre TSI Wins Engine Of The Year, Once Again

Volkswagen has taken out the International Engine of the Year award for the second year running, with the same 1.4 litre TSI four-cylinder engine that took the prize in the 2009 awards. The small four-cylinder is found in a number of VW models, including the Golf, Jetta and Tiguan.

While last year was Volkswagen's first victory in the awards, it was a debut that had the German giant take home the crown for 11 of the 12 categories - although 2010 saw a more even spread.

“I and the entire Volkswagen development team are extremely proud to receive this major international prize in the overall category for the second year in succession for the 1.4 twincharger,” VW’s head of gasoline engine development, Dr. Rüdiger Szengel said.

Other victories this year included Best New Engine for Fiat's 1.4 litre MultiAir engine that powers the Alfa Romeo MiTo and upcoming Giulietta, while Toyota picked up Best Fuel Economy / Green Engine for the 1.8 litre petrol-hybrid powertrain featured in the Prius.

Best Performance Engine and Best Engine Above 4.0 Litre went to Mercedes' AMG-developed range-spanning 6.2 litre V8 - an engine soon to be superseded by the company's new 5.5 litre engine - and Audi took out the honours for Best 2.0 Litre To 2.5 Litre with the 2.5 litre five-cylinder turbo found in the TT RS.
