Victoria Police To Launch Road Safety Blitz In Melbourne CBD

Victoria Police will be keeping a close eye on pedestrians, cyclists and motocyclists in Melbourne's CBD from tomorrow until Friday, and will be issuing on-the-spot fines to anyone caught flouting road rules.

Crossing the road against a red light will earn you a $57 fine, while riding a pushbike on the footpath will see you slugged for the same amount. Riding a motorbike on a footpath will result in an $85 fine and if you're a cyclist who fails to stop at a red light, beware: your transgression may cost you $227.

"We want to put a stop to this sort of behaviour and by hitting people in the hip pocket, we are making them think twice before they do it again and put their lives at risk," said Senior Sergeant Shane Pettingill from the Transport Management Unit.

"Too many people think ‘it won’t happen to me’ when they run across the road or ride their bike through a red light.

"The reality is, however, that it does happen every day and unfortunately a car is going to come off much better than the pedestrian or cyclist it hits."

In the past 12 months two pedestrians have been killed, 66 seriously injured and a total of 358 collisions recorded in the city involving pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and motorists.

Major intersections will be targeted by the blitz from tomorrow until Friday, with the corners of Spencer and Collins Streets, Spencer and Bourke Streets, Elizabeth and Flinders Streets, Flinders and Swanston Streets, and Swanston and Collins Streets being of particular interest to the police.
