Owners of older vehicles in the Victorian suburb of Broadmeadows will benefit from a police handout today, with officers giving away a hundred free immobilisers.

The giveaway forms part of an effort to reduce car theft in the area, with over 70 percent of vehicles stolen in the greater Hume region manufactured before 1993.

"The immobiliser is designed to recognise the owner's key, therefore stopping the engine from turning over if any other device is used," Leading Senior Constable Leigh Harris said.

"This is a great initiative to prevent older cars from being stolen," she said.

Certificates worth $200 will be given out to the first hundred residents today and tomorrow between 10am and 12pm at the Broadmeadows Town Centre on Pearcedale Parade.

A certified mechanic will then be able fit the device for free at a later date.
