Victoria Police Blitzing The Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend

Police will be blitzing Victoria's roads this coming long weekend, kicking off Operation Aegis VIII from tomorrow. The blitz will see the state's roads "smothered" with police cars, motorbikes, bicycles and foot patrols.

VicRoads is also supplying nine Transport Safety Service cars to add to the police fleet involved in highway patrols.

"The VicRoads' vehicles primary focus will be on enforcing freight regulations, however we believe the visibility of the cars on the roads will discourage dangerous and irresponsible driving behaviour," Superintendent Neville Taylor said.

At 144 fatalities, Victoria's road toll is currently 16 deaths higher than the same time last year. Police have noted however that the number of serious injuries has decreased.

Victoria's last long weekend, Easter, saw 5285 speeding fines issued, along with 835 infringements for mobile phone use, 511 for drink driving, and 800 for driving while unlicensed or disqualified.

Operation Aegis VIII officially kicks off at 12.01am Friday and will finish on Monday night.
