Victoria Police in the north-western city of Ballarat have blitzed disqualified drivers this week with Operation D-Tec, using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.

Running for just four hours yesterday, the technology saw police and the Victorian Sheriff's Office recover $70,000 in unpaid fines from 15 people with outstanding warrants.

One driver was found to owe $50,000 in unpaid fines and had his car wheels clamped.

The operation targeted unauthorised drivers including unlicensed or disqualified drivers at sites in Creswick Road and Gillies Street, Wendouree.

Police issued 26 penalty notices in total, including 12 for unregistered vehicles and two for drink-driving and unlicenced driving.

A taxi driver was also fined for having six passengers in his vehicle, including two unrestrained children.

Victoria's road toll currently stands at 19, down from 26 for the same period last year.
