Over the last week we have received confirmation from non other than Bob Lutz, that the new VE Commodore Sportwagon will not join the sedan, as part of the North American Pontiac range later this year. Apparently, wagons are not fashionable enough and sell poorly in the States. There is however, still plenty of interest being shown in the VE Ute and Lutz is said to be a big fan of the Aussie load lugger.

In a bit of a twist, Lutz has gone on record to say that if the VE Ute proves successful then there is every possibility that a dual-cab version will become a reality, for both the Australian and U.S. markets. In fact, Lutz confirmed that they will present a four-door Ute concept at this years New York Motor Show.

“We will have a Ute concept at the NY show, but that is going to be badged GMC. That is a global design study – and a very interesting study in that it is a GMC tough-looking four-door Ute that could then obviously be badged as a Holden for Australia. It is very tough looking, with a sport-utility look that is very low, very aggressive looking, a blend between a sport utility and the classic Australian four-door ute,” said Bob Lutz

Lutz also quipped that a two door Ute may make an appearance at the New York show, but in the same breath confirmed that there are no plans for production of a Pontiac Ute at this stage. The four-door Ute concept is being developed in Australia and one wonders if this may be the concept vehicle that Lutz has suggested will “knock everyone's socks off” at this years Melbourne Motor Show?

One can’t help thinking that the lines of the VE Commodore Ute will lend themselves far better to a dual-cab arrangement than those of the superceded VZ series, which no matter how you dressed it up looked awkward.
