FIVE POINT Safety Check figures released by the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) this week show that as many as 31 percent of cars on Victoria's roads may be unsafe.

This year, participating repairers tested 4100 vehicles against VACC's Five Point Safety Check of critical safety features. A total of 1287 vehicles failed the inspection of brakes, tyres, lights, steering and restraints.

Conducted free when vehicles are serviced at participating repairers, an alarming 25 percent of the vehicles tested - more than 1000 - had unsafe tyres.

VACC commented that while other road and driver-safety campaigns are commendable, the State Government needs to also take action on vehicle maintenance as a factor in road safety.
