Triple Eight Racing’s Craig Lowndes has continued his team’s domination of the V8 Supercar season, winning both races of the Winton round of the championship.

Lowndes ended team mate Jamie Whincup’s four-race winning streak on Saturday, leading him home in a one-two before capitalising on an early safety car to secure his second win yesterday.

Mark Winterbottom and Garth Tander rounded off the podium while Whincup struggled with his tyres to finish 13th.

Lowndes’ win though wasn’t without controversy as Triple Eight Racing is under investigation for a suspected illegal component on its cars.

Rivals have accused the team of using an illegal part to fit the front splitter to the chassis instead of the usual bolts, alleging it provides added grip.

While no protest has been lodged, The Age reports that V8 organisers will inspect cars built by Triple Eight Racing to determine their legality.

Team principal Roland Dane was furious at the accusations, telling the V8 Supercars website his team has been victimised for its barnstorming success.

“Our splitter is exactly the same as all the other Fords. It’s the mounting system that allows it if it hits a kerb like turn one at Adelaide the wrong way so it doesn’t smash into smithereens,” he said.

“I would have called that clever, but maybe for some people they need to try to justify why they’re not winning; good luck to them.

“So there’s no stewards inquiry, there’s no protest, it’s a matter of V8 Supercars now just making an interpretation of whether what we’ve been using for four years we can still use or not and I’m happy with that.”
