After having spent an undoubtedly gruelling two weeks with President Obama's automotive task force - most of it, most certainly, on 'the rack' - GM and Chrysler will now play host on home turf in Detroit.

The US Government task force has been sent to Detroit to get a closer, on-the-job look at the inner workings of America's struggling giant automakers.

The subsequent meetings, tours, and a test drive of GM's Volt, will play a critical roll in each company's ability to secure further financial support from the US Congress.

During this time, officials will study each manufacturer's plans for a sustainable future and assess the viability of their proposals for future profitability.

To date, GM has already received USD$13.4 billion in loans while Chrysler has been in receipt of USD$4 billion. A further USD $16.6 billion is being requested by GM, with Chrysler raising its hand for an additional USD $5 billion.

We should have further information on the outcome of the visit once officials return to Washington. We'll keep you posted.
