Skoda has released details on its updated Rapid sedan and ‘Spaceback’ (hatchback) models which will debut in two weeks at the 2017 Geneva motor show.

Styling changes aren’t massive – a new front bumper with bi-xenon headlights and LED DRLs, modified fog lights joined by a chrome strip (for a wider looking visual) and black-tinted C-shaped tail-lights for a sportier rear-end (optional LED rear lights for the sedan).

The Spaceback picks-up a larger rear hatchback window.

A similar story inside with new door inlays, re-designed air-vents, revised air-conditioning controls and the addition of two USB ports for rear-seat passengers.

New technology sees the introduction of auto high-beam and a WLAN mobile hotspot.

There is bigger news under the bonnet with the inclusion of two versions of Volkswagen Group’s three-cylinder turbocharged 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine – one delivering 70kW and the other 81kW.

The three-cylinder engine replaces the previous 81kW/175Nm turbocharged 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit.

No changes for the 92kW/200Nm turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol engine.

In other markets the Skoda Rapid is sold with a choice of 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre turbodiesels.

While Australian details have not been announced – currently only the Rapid Spaceback model is sold locally – expect things to become clearer closer to launch in the third quarter of this year.
