The iPhone geeks among us (hi, yes, I’ve recently joined the cult, nice to meet you) will be aware that Apple overnight announced a raft of updates to the iPhone operating system, due to land around June.

Along with the desperately-pleasing addition of ‘copy & paste’ to the iPhone’s abilities, Apple has also added that which has been most sorely lacking from the iPhone’s GPS capability: turn-by-turn directions.

While this doesn’t mean that your iPhone will be a straight-out-of-the-box replacement for your TomTom or Navman, it does mean that Apple has now opened the door for third party developers to create apps that will allow exactly that. 

If those apps are good at their job, one wonders how long it’ll be until TomTom unveils the TomPhone…
