Toyota has teased what appears to be a brand-new addition to its slowly-expanding family of Prius hybrid vehicles, with the as-yet unseen car scheduled to be fully unveiled on March 23 at the New York Auto Show.

Currently there are three distinct Prius variants: the Prius C light hatch, the Prius V 7-seat wagon and the regular Toyota Prius, an all-new generation of which has launched only recently in Australia.

From the single teaser image, it's clear this car - whether production model or concept - bears little resemblence to any existing Prius.

It appears lower, sleeker and that full-width tail lamp treatment it also looks sportier. Could Toyota be about to unveil a performance-oriented Prius? Maybe.

But then again, maybe not. The Prius family is still missing a sedan and a crossover, both of which would arguably sell in greater quantities than a sports model. A low-slung coupe would also look out of place in what is the most conservative product line of the world's most conservative car manufacturer.

Toyota isn't giving out many clues, but says the Prius show car will be "the next mechanical marvel in the Prius lineup," and boast "stand-out style [and] intelligent eco-tech".

We'll find out exactly what that means next week when Toyota's mysterious Prius hits the Toyota stand in New York.
