ANCAP - the Australasian New Car Assessment Program - is expected to announce its crash-safety test results for the 2010 Toyota Hybrid Camry this week, with speculation in the industry suggesting the new model will carry the same 4-Star rating as the regular Camry range.

The Camry range falls just shy of a 5-Star rating, with Toyota choosing not to equip the Camry with the passenger seatbelt warning system and improved steering column necessary to achieve the top ANCAP crash-safety score.

The Camry's V6-powered sibling, the Aurion gained these updates and now carries a 5-Star rating.

While not acknowledging the anticipated 4-Star result, Toyota Australia has issued a statement this morning that calls the ANCAP testing process into question.

"Toyota Australia acknowledges ANCAP as one measure that can help consumers identify cars that are safe," the carmaker's statement reads.

"However, ANCAP does not test the life-saving benefits of features such as vehicle stability control, traction control and anti-skid brakes – all of which are standard on every Camry."

Alluding to an anticipated 4-Star result for Great Wall's updated X240 SUV (a 2-star leap which ANCAP is also expected to announce today), the statement adds that the ANCAP testing process does not consider enough factors in deciding its results.

"Toyota Australia rejects as a distortion any suggestion that Camry models provide a level of safety that is the same as cars that do not offer such vital life-saving technology or have fewer than Camry’s standard six airbags."

"Toyota conducts an extensive range of tests on all its vehicles, providing a level of safety that meets or exceeds safety standards in every country in which they are sold."

"The Camry range of vehicles offers a comprehensive package of active and passive safety. Customers can drive these cars with confidence, knowing they have advanced safety features that have been shown to save lives."

Both Holden and Ford have recently updated models in their line-ups - the Territory gaining the necessary passenger seatbelt warning signal and the Holden Ute getting six airbags, passenger seatbelt warning and a revised steering column shroud. Both models now carry a 5-Star rating.
