TOYOTA REVEALED in December that it will unveil a new small car at this month's New Delhi Auto Show, codenamed Entry Family Car.
The world number one carmaker has today released a teaser video of the new car, officially named Toyota Etios - meaning 'origin of'.
While Toyota remains tight-lipped on specific details, the Etios is expected to be powered by the same 1.4 litre diesel offered in international versions of the Yaris, along with a 1.2 litre petrol engine.
Priced to compete with the Suzuki Swift, marketed in India by Maruti Suzuki, the Etios is expected to cost around AU$10,000.
To keep costs down, the Etios will reportedly be equipped with only one window wiper, along with basic seating and low-cost interior plastics.
Toyota is expected to unveil both sedan and hatch versions of the Etios at the New Delhi show, with the hatch launching around three months after the sedan.
The Etios has been developed specifically for emerging markets, with Russian and Latin American launches expected to follow the new car's introduction in India.
Toyota said in December that it plans to begin production of the new car in India late next year, with Brazilian production due in 2011.
Small cars are expected to be the focus of the New Delhi show, with compact cars accounting for nearly three quarters of India's new car sales - expected to rise by 14.5 percent to 2.4 million total sales in 2014.
Honda, Volkswagen and Ford are expected to debut their own compact models at the show, which launches on January 5.
