Toyota Australia has given its popular Corolla and Yaris models a new edge in the small and light car markets. It has made the most of the strong Aussie dollar to cut prices and to extend the list of standard features for both models.

Pricing for the entry-level Yaris YR three-door hatch manual has dropped to $14,990. The YRS three- and five-door models see a price drop of $950 and the addition of side, full-length curtain and driver's knee airbags as standard equipment.

The Corolla range has also come in for new pricing and features, with the Ascent manual hatch now priced at $20,990. New standard equipment includes full-length curtain and driver's knee airbags - making for a total of seven - along with rear power windows.

The Corolla Levin SX hatch gains the same extra airbags and gets a $700 price cut, and the Levin ZR gets a $910 price cut while gaining the previously-optional $1500 moonroof as standard equipment.

The Corolla Conquest hatch also gets the moonroof as standard, along with a price cut of $610.

Corolla Ascent and Conquest sedans, which had their prices lowered with this year's facelift, are fitted with the same features as their hatch equivalents. Ultima sedan gains the moonroof.

The Corolla has been the best-selling small car in Australia for the past 10 years, and was also the country's overall top seller in July, August and October last year.

This year, it faces stiff competition from the Mazda3's year-to-date sales of 30,048, currently leading the Corolla on 29,338 sales YTD.

While the Yaris led the light car segment between 2003 and 2008, last year saw it drop to second place in a tight finish with fewer than 200 sales between it and the Hyundai Getz. The positions remain unchanged this year, with Hyundai's ageing (and soon to be retired) Getz holding 16,813 sales YTD to the Yaris' 15,727 sales.

Toyota will be looking to the new pricing and features of both models to claw back its lead in both segments.
