TOYOTA AUSTRALIA has confirmed today that it is investigating a possible brake problem with the current Toyota Prius. The announcement comes after an undisclosed number of customers reported an "inconsistent brake feel" over potholes, bumps and slippery road surfaces.

While Toyota Australia has confirmed that the brake problem has also been reported overseas, the carmaker has assured customers that the issue is not related to recent international recalls concerning accelerator pedal problems.

In the United States, the government-operated Office of Defects Investigation has so far recorded 124 Prius brake reports from customers.

The US' National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes the reports as "allegations of momentary loss of braking capability while travelling over an uneven road surface, pothole or bump".

Toyota Australia has declined comment until a more complete report can be made.
