Sydney Traffic Set To Get Worse In Coming Decades

SYDNEY'S ROAD network is only going to get worse in the coming decades, according to government documents uncovered by The Daily Telegraph this week.

The report describes dissension among NSW Premier Kristina Keneally's offsiders, with complaints that there aren't enough funds to cover the State Government's plans.

According to the documents, a proposal to duplicate the M5 tunnel has been binned, and projects such as the M4 East and F3 to M2 extension are reportedly more than 16 years away. Construction of the M2 to M4 East tunnel is not expected to begin until 2036.

Proposed works to the F6 to Wollongong was reportedly vetoed by the Premier hours before the Metropolitan Transport Plan went to press, leaving it out of the blueprint all together.

Traffic in Sydney is expected to slow dramatically by 2021, with the average bus speed predicted to be around 18km/h. By 2041, those speeds will have dropped to 14km/h.

A spokesperson for Premier Keneally said this week that plans are underway to improve "strategic bus corridors".
