Suzuki Delays The Kizashi Sedan

Suzuki's Kizashi sedan has been a popular concept here at TMR since we saw it unveiled at the 2008 Sydney Motor Show. We admired then its to-die-for bold styling and strong stance. We also liked the idea of a 220kW V6 powering all four wheels.

Unfortunately, the global economic downturn appears to have claimed it as another scalp. Originally slated to hit showrooms in 2010, Japanese business newspaper, the Nikkei, has reported that the production version of the Suzuki Kizashi has been postponed.

The fate of two new factories Suzuki was planning to build in Thailand and Russia are similarly in limbo as the company waits on the world to sort its finances out. The report is that both the car and the factories have been put on hold - not cancelled, which is some comfort to fans.

While this news has not been officially confirmed by Suzuki, the shrinking market for new cars has hit manufacturers hard. The company has already pulled out of rallying. With declining sales everywhere, it would make little sense to build new manufacturing facilities for a large family sedan, a segment that is taking the biggest pounding in global sales (ask Holden and Ford about that one).

We can hope that the Nikkei got its wires crossed about the Kizashi's future - but don't bank on it. When Suzuki makes an official announcement, TMR will be there to tell you about it.
