Teased earlier this month by a single up-close shot of its carbon-fibre roof, Subaru's WRX STI tS has this week made its Japanese market debut, limited to just 400 units.

Powered by the same 2.0 litre boxer engine as its regular Japanese-market sibling, the WRX STI tS features not only a carbon-fibre roof, but also an aluminium bonnet, specially tuned suspension, a front lip spoiler and STI's 18-inch alloy wheels.

Available with the WRX STI manual and 'A-Line' automatic variants, the tS model gets flexible rear support and rear suspension link. Subaru says the tS models will feature the same front and rear dampers fitted to the regular WRX STI variants.

Inside, the tS gets Recardo sports seats, a push-button ignition and unique tS-branded door sill plates.

A new model in the WRX STI Spec C line has also debuted in Japan, gaining new ball bearings for its turbocharger and an ECU tune that sees torque increased by 8Nm.

The Spec C also gets a reinforced crossmember up front, and the Torsen-type rear LSD has been swapped out for a mechanical version.

The special WRX STI has also come in for a few weight-loss tricks, including an aluminium bonnet, a downsized battery and Laminar windows in the front and sides.

Australia

Speaking with TMR, Subaru Australia's David Rowley has confirmed that there are no changes planned for the local WRX STI line-up.
