The lines of cooperation between Subaru and major shareholder Toyota may be set to increase beyond the highly-anticipated joint venture FT-86 sports car expected to debut later this year.

According to reports out of the US this week, both carmakers have begun to explore the possibility of the next-generation Kluger and Tribeca SUVs sharing a common platform.

How the two brands will approach the issue of engine layouts and options - with the current Kluger featuring a transverse V6 and the Tribeca's boxer engine in a longitudinal layout - remains unclear.

With both versions of the co-developed FT-86 sports car set to feature a Subaru engine however, the next-gen Tribeca and Kluger could conceivably share the same powertrain.

With the next-generation Kluger expected to arrive in 2014, the current platform (updated late last year) will be seven years old - while the Tribeca, if it is replaced at the same time, will be just shy of 10 years old.
