THE SUBARU COSWORTH STI CS400 will hit the UK market next month, and with all 75 examples destined to stay at home, Australian hopefuls will be going without.

Setting the CS400 apart from the regular STI hatch, Cosworth has radically enhanced the 2.5 litre boxer engine, adding high-performance pistons, connecting rods, bearings and a strengthened, redesigned head gasket. There is also a tweaked ECU and a new turbo set-up, with a new compressor design and wastegate actuator.

Thanks to the might of Cosworth's engineers, the CS400 produces 295kW - compared to the regular STI's 221kW - pushing the Subaru past the stock model's 5.2-second 0-100km/h time into supercar territory with a 3.7-second run.

An upgraded suspension gets new coil springs 10mm shorter than the standard set, along with AP Racing 355mm front disc brakes gripped by six-piston calipers.

With the bulk of the special features appearing on the underside, styling tweaks for the Subaru Cosworth CS400 STI are considerably more subtle.

Externally, the CS400 gets a choice of red, dark grey or satin black paint, a modestly restyled front bumper with an integrated lip and a mesh grille, Cosworth badging, a redesigned rear spoiler and black 18-inch light alloy wheels on a 12mm-wider track.

In the cabin, there's a pair of Recaro sports seats, piano black dash trim and Cosworth badging.

While the Cosworth edition won't be heading to Australia, the 2011 Impreza STI, now available in both sedan and hatch form, will arrive in Australian showrooms later this year.
