Following the strategic alliance announced by Daimler and Renault-Nissan earlier this year, there has been rising speculation that Renault will develop a new city car based on the platform that underpins the Daimler-owned Smart ForTwo.

While neither group has confirmed plans on that front, the strategic alliance will at least see Mercedes-Benz utilise the diesel and petrol experience of the Renault and Nissan brands for its next-generation ForTwo - opening the door to a Renault-badged version.

Our preview rendering (above) offers one look at how a Smart-based Renault city car might conceivably be styled, drawing inspiration from the small Renault Wind convertible.

Even if not in petrol form, the odds of a Renault city car debuting in the coming years are strong. The French carmaker announced late last year that it will move to launch a range of electric vehicles, drawing in part on the technology seen in Nissan's LEAF 'zero emission' car.
