Despite its clear value-for-money positioning and Volkswagen-engineered line-up, the Skoda brand continues to languish at the bottom end of the Australian new car market. In November alone, Skoda sold just 141 vehicles, lagging behind Citroen's 150 sales and leading the one-car Fiat on 112.

Buyers may be hard-pressed to drive past Skoda in the coming weeks however, with the Czech brand offering one year's free insurance on every new vehicle sold between now and February 28, 2011.

“We knew that rising insurance costs were becoming an issue for car buyers across the board, so we simply removed the problem,” Matthew Wiesner, Head of Škoda Australia said today.

In 2009, the Skoda brand took top honours in the Medium and Large Car categories of The Motor Report's Best Drive, Best Value Awards. The award for best medium car went to the Octavia RS 2.0 TSI, while the new Superb 2.0 TDI was awarded best large car.

Driving the Skoda Superb wagon earlier this year, TMR Review Editor Tony O'Kane described the large car as "a definite winner, delivering one of the nicest drives in the wagon segment."

The Superb has gone on to impress experts and judges in international markets also.

Despite these plaudits and accolades, it remains to be seen if Skoda Australia's limited-time insurance offer will get buyers into the driver's seat.

In the mean time, Skoda's Australian arm is set to introduce the brand's Yeti crossover in the next year, while a local launch for the stylish Fabia RS is also under consideration.
