Australian buyers eager to get their hands on the all-new Saab 9-5 can rest easy, with the Spyker-owned Swedish carmaker announcing today that it has established operations in Australia.

Over the coming months, Saab Automobile's local operations will transition from GM Holden Ltd to Saab Australia, a new wholly-owned subsidiary that will control sales and service in both Australia and New Zealand.

“We are delighted to make this announcement, which represents the start of a new chapter for Saab as an independent car manufacturer in the Australian and New Zealand markets," Saab Automobile's Executive Director of Sales Adrian Hallmark said.

"After evaluating a number of different business models, we believe that having a Saab-owned subsidiary is the best way for Saab to optimize its great sales potential and to best cater for current and future customers in these markets."

Saab Australia will be responsible for supplying and maintaining dealerships in both countries, with the existing dealer network continuing to serve customers during the transition period. Specific details and plans for the future of the brand's dealer network have yet to be revealed.

Hallmark described Australia and New Zealand markets as vital markets for the company in the Asia-Pacific region, with a relaunch of the Saab brand to take place in both countries next year.

He added that the new 9-5 Sedan and SportCombi (wagon) and the upcoming 9-4x crossover will all star in the local Saab line-up.
